Lyrics

New Black

Down there where we dare not go for fear of no return
Down there where we’ve been told only shadows grow
Light stands on its head in a mirror of alpenglow
As women tend to the furnace of their hearts
Children swim beneath the surface

Spring breaks with feathers flashing in an endless display of courtship
Banners are strung across the hallways and over doorways
While merry guests come and go they come and go

Wonder how we’re gonna pull the stars from the stripes
Seems the new black is this constant shade of white

Yes up here where we spit and swear but truly lack the style
Trees line the hills waiting to join their brothers splashed with red in a lifeless pile
Our benefactors sipping coffee on the corner of every street
The river sparkles a perfect purple, yellow, blue, and green

Wonder how we’re gonna pull the stars from the stripes
When every doctor’s washing windows in this transitory life

Morning come lock the door let’s retire to the fields
Nightfall lay your sweet sleep over me
Shh hush now, don’t disturb their dreams
Shh hush now, big mamma’s watching her TV
Mary come I’ve the devil round for tea
Anna come it tastes sweeter when there’s three
Shh hush now, don’t disturb their dreams
Shh hush now, big mamma’s watching her TV

Wonder how we’re gonna pull the stars from the stripes
When every doctor’s washing windows in this transitory life
Wonder how we’re gonna pull the stars from the stripes
Seems the new black is this constant shade of white
